I love you more than there are leaves on the ground

On the way to school on this bright, crisp autumn day I declared to our son, “I love you to the moon, around Saturn, and to the sun and back.” Paolo responded with something similar, adding a “googol” in there to show he meant business. We have had this cute give-and-take many times over the past couple of years. It was time for something new. I started thinking of other ways to show how much we loved one another. I tried, “I love you more than there are grains of sand in the world.” There was a long silence from Paolo as he thought about it, then, “Each piece of sand?” He thought that was pretty cool, but I thought I could do better, “I love you more than there are cockroaches in the world.” This made him giggle and immediately say, “I love you more than there are cockroaches and  bugs in the world!” and away we went. Silly or serious or both, how do you express your love to your children?
